In 2002 one man had a dream. Mars van der Colff saw people in communities across this land coming together to create educational centers for underprivileged children living in impoverished areas—specifically within the black townships in South Africa.
The need to create safe havens for young children which offers a strong educational foundation during the formative years was great. Many of the children in some of the existing preschools were not ready for public school placement when age-appropriate and literally “fell off the map” when it comes to acquiring a higher education which knowingly paves the path to higher quality of living and a productive and sustainable lifestyle. In addition, many of the preschools were operating in hazardous and deplorable conditions.
Equally important was the desire to engage people in the United States in a project which utilizes their gifts and talents in a unique yet tangible way.
Thus with a heart compelled, a solid need evident, and a clear calling upon his life, Cargo of Dreams was born.
Since that time, Mars’ journey has led to numerous encounters with individuals whose passions compelled them to join the journey—and the Cargo of Dreams team.
Our international relief efforts improve quality of life for women and children living in adverse conditions and extreme poverty—plus provide opportunities for everyday people in the United States to utilize their gifts and talents in a unique, tangible, and creative ways by converting the containers into fully functional facilities with insulation, electrical, plumbing, bathrooms, kitchens, and more.
Whether providing a school—“edutainer”, health clinic—“meditainer”, or even an “imagitainer”—anything one can conceive in order to provide relief for others—we believe that our model and approach changes the face of traditional international relief efforts as we have previously known and will literally engage thousands of people otherwise not involved in a hands-on and practical effort.
CARGO of DREAMS’ mission in South Africa specifically, is to create a solid educational foundation for children in need by engaging businesses, organizations, churches and communities in a collaborative project by using their collective gifts and talents in a practical hands-on application.
